Two Large Screening Companies Under Fire for Database Security Lapses
Hackers compromised a database compiled by information industry giant Lexis Nexis, gaining access to the personal files of as many as 32,000 people, company officials said Wednesday. Federal and company investigators were looking into the breach at Seisint, a recently acquired subsidiary of Lexis Nexis that has aggregated millions of personal files. It is the second database breach at a large screening company in recent months. Recently, ChoicePoint Inc. admitted that the personal information of 145,000 Individuals may have been stolen by thieves posing as small business customers.

Figerprint-based Pre Employment Screening Required for Hazmat Drivers
Commercial transporation that invloves hazardous materials has always been a highly regulated industry. However, since 9-11, the U.S. government has stepped up its scrutiny of the industry significantly. Effective May 31, 2005 the Homeland Security Department, in conjunction with the Transportation Security Administration, is mandating that all truck drivers transporting hazardous materials undergo employee background checks. The pre employment screening process will involve a fingerprint-based check, searching the FBI's criminal history database (NCIC).

Survey Finds 96% of Companies Engaged in Pre Employment Screening
A survey recently released by SHRM (Society for Human Resources Managment) showed that 96% of the companies that were surveyed engaged in some form of pre employment screening, including background and reference checking. I-9 verifications were the most commonly used screening tool, with 85% of respondents indicating that they always verify the Social Security Number. 68% said they always perform a criminal background check, despite the absence of a central source of criminal information. 35% said their companies always verify a candidate’s educational background, as well as any certification noted on their resumes. Finally, two out of three respondents said that they always obtain an applicant’s dates of employment.
